New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS) has appointed Stewart Hamilton to take over as chief executive and general manager following the resignation of Gretta Stephens.
He will be returning to Tiwai Point after beginning his career there as a research engineer in 1996.
Fairfax Media said Hamilton has almost 20 years of experience in the aluminium industry, having attained the role of leading Pacific Aluminium's business improvement and technology area for Australia and New Zealand.
Hamilton has been in Tanzania for the past three years with Acacia Mining, as general manager of the Buzwagi gold mine.
Brian Cooper, chief operating officer for Pacific Aluminium – a division of Rio Tinto which has again been putting some of its regional smelters on the market – told Fairfax that it was a coup to have Hamilton returning to NZAS.
