New data for Nelson meeting

The importance of new aeromagnetic, radiometric and soil geochemistry data sets for large areas of the Buller, East Nelson and northern Marlborough regions will be outlined at the next meeting of the AusIMM Nelson Discussion Group.

Mark Rattenbury of GNS Science will give a presentation to the group on the evening of Friday April 13 at the Constance Barnicoat Room of the Richmond Library in Queen Street, Richmond.

The new data was produced with the support of New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals (NZP&M).

His theme will be: “Making geological and exploration sense of new northern South Island airborne geological and geochemical data sets”.

Rattenbury is a research leader for GNS Science’s nationally significant collections and data sets. He was a key contributor to the national QMAP 1:250,000 geological mapping.

AusIMM said his current projects include new geological mapping of the Reefton goldfield and geological interpretation of aeromagnetic data sets of the South Island’s west and southern regions.

The Nelson Discussion Group said that together with radiometric data, the aeromagnetic and soil geochemistry data offer new opportunities to guide exploration.

“The melange rocks east of the ultramafic belt in east Nelson may offer the most exploration potential (copper, nickel, platinum group metals).”
